Gardening Trends for 2020
With everyone spending more time at home, we’re all looking to our gardens as extensions of our homes. We want our yard and surroundings to be beautiful, to stay busy outside and to enjoy our outdoor spaces.
Here are 4 garden trends for 2020 that you might want to try:
1) Dark Foliage
There’s more than one hue of green in the modern garden when it comes to foliage. We’re seeing more plants and shrubs with different colours of foliage to provide contrast and interest to garden beds. From dark green or purple to pink or red shrubs and plants, Edmonton landscape designers are featuring more variety as a beautiful tapestry in your yard. If you’re looking to add some plants with dark foliage to your garden, try these:
- Sambucus nigra
- Ageratina altissima ‘Chocolate’
- Canna ‘Russian Red’
- Purple Basil
Pro tip: Space out plants with dark foliage for a beautiful contrast and aesthetic.
2) Vertical Gardens
Take it to the next level with a vertical garden! We’re seeing more outdoor living walls, tiered planters or wall planters in Edmonton gardens. Vertical gardens are a great option to add plants and colour to your surroundings, especially in smaller spaces. They can be used to create privacy in an open backyard or used to create the concept of separate outdoor spaces. To build a living wall, you may want to get expert help from an Edmonton landscaping company, check out some pre-built options from local hardware stores or you can do a DIY wall planters.
This isn’t a new concept at all but it’s definitely experiencing a revival. Being able to reduce waste that goes to the landfill by recycling food or organic waste to improve the soil of your garden for free is a no brainer! Compost adds nutrients to your plants and helps your soil retain moisture. It’s easy to compost and it doesn’t require a lot of space, especially with the variety of compact bins for compost that are available. There are a number of guides on how to get started with composting but if composting isn’t for you, Rockland carries a number of nutrient rich soil and compost.
4) Garden to Table
Growing your own herbs, vegetables and fruits is the biggest trend this season. People are cooking at home more than ever and reducing the number of trips to the grocery store is a major plus during these times. Nothing beats having the freshest ingredients at your fingertips like plucking fresh basil for your homemade pizza, mint for your mojitos or lettuce for a nice salad!
