Frequently Asked Questions About Landscaping
Landscaping season has been a busy one at Rockland! We’ve enjoyed seeing returning customers and meeting new ones throughout spring and summer.
As you can imagine, during this time our crew gets all kinds of questions about landscaping supplies and various outdoor projects. Many homeowners come to the yard with an idea to improve their yard or garden while others come in with an issue that they’re trying to solve. Either way, our team is always happy to answer questions and help by providing knowledgeable, objective advice based on our many years of experience.
We put together a short list of our most frequently asked landscaping questions from YOU at the yard:
1) How do I calculate how much landscaping supplies are needed for my project?
The first step is to calculate the square footage of the area you are working on and our team can calculate it for you. Alternatively, you can use our landscaping materials volume calculator on the website where you can easily input your measurements. Enter the length, width, and depth of your space in any unit to automatically calculate the exact amount of product you need. To calculate the yardage conversion, take your length x width in feet and x your depth in inches and divide that by 324.
2) What should I use in high traffic areas?
If you have an area in your yard that is high traffic, you’ll want to avoid using grass in those particular spaces because grass can be damaged from frequent foot traffic. Instead, add a beautiful walkway or pathway using stone pavers or decorative rock, or a combination of both!
3) What are the best landscaping products for my pets?
To create a safe and comfortable yard for both you and your pets, use artificial turf or hardscaping materials. Durapet turf by Rymar is the perfect solution for pet owners who want a beautifully green yard without the struggle of stains and dead spots. Pea gravel and flagstone are both great alternatives to creating a space for your pet that is easy on the paws,
absorbs urine and is easy to clean.
4) Why use a weed barrier?
Using weed barrier is a must with shrubs, flower beds, and around trees! A proper weed barrier will save you time and money as it will decrease the amount of herbicide needed throughout the season. It will also help maintaining moisture creating an ideal environment for plants while keeping weeds out.
5) What landscaping product should I use under my deck or stairs?
The area underneath decks and stairs are prone to collecting water and moisture which can cause drainage problems resulting in many other bigger issues. Always ensure you fill these areas with products such as gravel, crushed rock or river rock to prevent water from pooling as still water can attract insects, and produce strong odours as well as rotting wood.
